Josie Iselin Art & Algae: A Journey Into The Curious World of Seaweed

Josie Iselin Art & Algae: A Journey Into The Curious World of Seaweed Online

Join us on Tuesday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. for a magical online presentation of fine art and scientific exploration with Josie Iselin author and illustrator of The Curious World of Seaweed.

For over twenty years Josie Iselin has used her flatbed scanner and computer exclusively for generating imagery. She is still captivated by the fluidity with which this technique allows her to render and design with three-dimensional objects. As a fine artist, Josie exhibits large-scale prints at select galleries, museums, hospital and other public spaces. Synthesizing the scientific stories of our coast is her overriding passion, bringing thoughtfulness and stewardship to this extraordinary place of discovery.

The book focuses on the North American Pacific coast, from Baja California in Mexico to Canada’s British Columbia, but includes a generous two-page picture, an outlier near the book’s end, of Irish moss. Her previous seaweed book, An Ocean Garden: The Secret Life of Seaweed, contained many specimens found in Vinalhaven, her East coast home.

Iselin is a photographer, author and designer of many books, with new projects always in development in her San Francisco studio, Loving Blind Productions. Her books focus on those forms in nature we find at hand and in particular, at the beach. Iselin holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard and an MFA from San Francisco State University. She currently teaches in the School of Design at San Francisco State University. For over twenty years Iselin has used her flatbed scanner and computer exclusively for generating imagery. As a fine artist, Iselin exhibits large-scale prints at select galleries, museums, hospitals and other public spaces.

The Curious World of Seaweed was released by Heyday Books in August 2019 and has been shortlisted for the Northern California Book Award and the the Alice Award, recognizing illustrated books. For more information about the program or questions, call the Library at 207-244-7064. Register below.
